Before taking aim at his family estate at the Domaine de Pallus in France in 2004, Bertrand Sourdais took a position as chief winemaker at a new project in an isolated area of the Ribera del Duero, launching Dominio de Atauta. Crafting wines with some of the oldest vines in Europe (up to 130 years old, pre-phylloxera as planted on sandy soils), it quickly became one of the most upcoming wineries in Spain, receiving top score ratings for all his wines. Since 2004, he has been travelling back and forth between the Loire Valley and the Ribera del Duero; meanwhile in 2010 Atauta was sold to a large group, and Bertrand decided to leave the project and start his own – Bodegas Antidoto.

Working closely with local growers to produce stunning grapes with an organic approach, he selects low volume producing parcels to make this cracking red wine fruit bomb. Aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels, Antidoto offers a glossy, sweet 'n' sour blackberry nose with brambly red tobacco over black pepper husk, cranberry and dark rocky earth. The wine has juicy plushness with crunch, minerality and earthy acidity. It offers subtle oak with good quality savory-nutty fruit tannins. Simple, direct and delicious with a lovely finishing note.

Conclusion: A beautiful red that is fresh and earthy. Best to decant and enjoy with a nice piece of roast lamb.

Not the most typical Spanish red, which often are dark, tannic - this is very soft, and pretty dry. Got a wonderful aromatic profile with a great acidity. Need to be enjoyed at around 18deg for upmost enjoyment,and better to decant it. (Posted on 22/04/2017)
